Anytime a smaller camera hits the market, the ergonomics are almost always called into question. Electronic shutter for a variety of settings Full-time electronic shutter Shutter shock, sound, and lags: these are disadvantages of mechanical shutters. In a strict sporting sense, "batting above your weight" is nonsense. In this first iteration, the image quality is solid and while the minimalist design might lack the snazzy appeal of other cameras, the fp is easy to use and, for the most part, quite intuitive. The camera has been designed with lots of functional keys and controls, to help you get the set-up that you want quickly. This is a camera that is designed to be a start of a system where you need to buy add-ons that suit your shooting style; and that alone will appeal to lots of people who like this modular approach. But there's no flat profile available, so you can't capture footage with a low-contrast, low-saturation look for additional editing flexibility. The Sigma fp does not offer Log or LUT options for video, but this is offset by its CinemaDNG capture, which offers a lot of headroom for grading later. The L-Mount realilzes a camera system that goes beyond the boundaries between manufacturers, with unprecedented levels of scalability and possibilities. I was worried about several issues i. But it adds bulk to this otherwise small camera and hardly seems worth the effort and expense for still shooters. Small enough to take along for casual use, it is a perfect camera with which to enjoy full-frame quality images in everyday snaps. 0, making it possible to fine-tune the brightness even more. There are a number of in-camera color options available, and if you process Raw images in Lightroom you'll have access to them there as well. But the rolling shutter seems VERY well controlled. This particular location is a pretty iconic spot in San Diego, but unfortunately has an incredibly bright light that shines down onto the beach from a tall building just across the street. You can select a flexible spot, let the camera choose the point of focus on its own, or select an object for tracking. It's a shame, because the rest of the fp's video feature set is quite good. Both delivered sharp images with crisp focus and excellent details. When looking at the fp, the first thing that will likely jump out is the small form factor. The static AF performance is fine, but the continuous AF mode is pretty patchy. It's not ideal, especially since you'll typically use different shutter speed settings for video than for stills, even in the same conditions. The record format that best suits the purpose of the video can be selected. Surely it is a fairly straightforward idea, and quite true, that this diminutive little Sigma FP camera packs a lot of punch for it's dimensions and price, hence "a camera that bats far above its weight". Special functions comparable to professional cinema cameras The SIGMA fp's Cine mode comes with a variety of special functions that are comparable to those of professional cinema cameras. The full expanded range of ISO options stretches from ISO 6 to ISO 102400. With the right amount of available light, I was in love with the way it was rendering color in my nightscapes. This does feel like a really rugged camera, and you could probably bash it around a bit and it would be fine as mostly happens on video shoots. I used slightly shorter exposures for the foreground images so I could stay sharp in the images. Sigma says it has addressed the AF performance with its Ver2. The Sigma fp also feels pretty responsive when you press the buttons. Perhaps one of the important accessories to look into for the Sigma fp is a handgrip. You also need to use the right software to edit it. Designed to be modular, the Sigma fp comes stripped down to its core with a number of optional components. The viewfinder on my Sigma fp test camera was missing its mounting plate, so I was unable to test it fully. There's a step back at ISO 6400 and 12800, and a bit more visible smudging of fine detail at ISO 25600. If you've shot 35mm film with a Leica CL, the fp's form feels familiar. A model with a deeper buffer, more reliable phase detection and better subject tracking, and better ergonomics for use with big, long lenses is in order. We believe Sigma will work upon this camera and upgrade certain features that will make it a balanced offering, for pictures and videos. It has a single SD slot with support for the latest cards and the fastest UHS-II transfer speeds—you'll want to buy the fastest possible card, currently around 300MBps, if you want to take advantage of Raw video recording. But it's simply not as effective as a 5-axis IBIS system or a powered gimbal for stabilizing footage when you're moving along with the camera. Our Verdict It's easy to fall in love with the miniature size of the Sigma fp and its utilitarian, industrial design. CINE• In terms of ergonomics, the lack of a viewfinder and small frame make it much better suited for wider focal lengths and smaller prime lenses than with telephotos and weight zooms. Because I wanted to appear larger in frame to show detail in the products, I took a separate exposure focused on my foreground and then jumped behind the camera to adjust focus to infinity and capture a photo of the stars. You can see that very clearly in the sample video below, where the Sigma fp echoed the results we got in stills photography — it can find focus, but it can lose it very quickly too and spend some time getting it back again. The display is touch sensitive, but while you can use to select focus points, you can't use it for making menu selections, hence the wide choice of buttons.
